Android-ers Come Forward!

by JonBot on Apr.10, 2010, under Windows Phone Thoughts

If you promise not to tell anyone, I’ll tell you a secret: I use an Android phone. If you’re wondering why this is a secret, perhaps if I expand it out, you’ll see why: I am a Windows Mobile MVP, who used the platform exclusively for 7 years. I have written for a website focusing on Windows Mobile devices for over 5 years, and I own multiple Windows Mobile Devices. Yet still, I use a Nexus One as my daily driver. See, that’s why it’s a bit of a secret. And I’m sure you’re wondering why I’m telling you this.

Well, I’m not telling you this as a prelude to a “I’m leaving the site” post or a “I’ve used Android but it sucks compared to WinMo” fanboy post. I use an Android phone because the platform excites me, the same way that Windows Mobile and Windows Phone still excite me, and I believe that by using each platform I can write more informed posts on each side and contribute to both platforms (I also own an iPod Touch, for the same reason). In other words, Win Mo didn’t “lose” me, we’re just not “exclusive” anymore.

And I’m wondering how many other Thoughts readers may be seeing Android devices on the side (or full time)! If you’ve gone to the Android side, what do you like or dislike? What do you miss about Windows Mobile? And does Windows Phone 7 tempt you back (as it does me)? Don’t be afraid to admit it, android-ers, stand up and be counted!

Robbie Bach Talks, Engadget Listens

by JonBot on Oct.12, 2009, under Windows Phone Thoughts

http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/06/…-engadget-is-t/

“We’re currently at a multi-purpose Microsoft event right now — an event touring the company’s holiday lineup, as well as today’s launch of Windows phone devices (AKA, Windows Mobile 6.5). We had a chance to sit down with Robbie Bach, President of Microsoft’s Entertainment & Devices Division, and ask him some questions about where the big M is headed with its recent lineup.”

While the conversation with Robbie Bach had some interesting points on Windows Mobile and Windows Phones in general, in light of the recent Sidekick fiasco, I found the following point slightly ironic:

Peter Rojas asks about the company’s acquisition of Danger. Robbie: “There were clear reasons for us to acquire Danger — I think in time that will pan out. It wasn’t another OS, it was services… the Sidekick isn’t our brand, it’s T-Mobile’s brand.”

Oh how I bet many at Microsoft would love to keep repeating that mantra over the next week…

Sprint Announces Samsung Intrepid

by JonBot on Oct.09, 2009, under Windows Phone Thoughts

http://newsreleases.sprint.com/phoe…room&ID=1339138

” SAN DIEGO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Oct. 6, 2009– Sprint (NYSE: S) and Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile), the number one mobile phone provider in the United States1, today announced the upcoming arrival of Samsung IntrepidTM smartphone, a dynamic Windows® phone that lets the customer be productive on-the-go using America’s most dependable 3G network (EV-DO Rev. A)2 domestically and through international roaming when traveling worldwide. Samsung Intrepid features Windows Mobile® 6.5 Professional, and improves on previous Samsung Windows phones with a user experience that offers a customizable Today screen to display the features the user accesses most often and shows important information like new emails, text messages, missed calls and calendar appointments. It also has a richer Internet browsing experience and new personalization options including a diverse selection of designer themes and the ability to create an original look for your phone with the built-in theme creator.”

Another new device that will thankfully ship with 6.5. Wondering why their is no picture? Well for that gem you’ll have to head over to the press release and click on the “Picture Gallery” link near the bottom. Whereas one would expect to see what the Samsung Intrepid looks like, instead one gets low and high res Samsung and Sprint logos. Classy – just want I want to see, a logo I already see everywhere else! Here’s a hint though – the device looks quite a bit like a Blackjack from pictures purporting to be it on the web. Which makes it interesting as above it lists as a “professional” (e.g., touchscreen) device!

HD2′s First Official Appearance?

by JonBot on Oct.07, 2009, under Windows Phone Thoughts

http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/…-o2-uk-catalog/

“We’ve been furnished with the above page from an O2 in-store catalog detailing the HTC HD2 (aka Leo), which was set for a UK release on October 12 (though we’re hearing that may have slipped to the 26th). Interesting that it’s pictured with a stock Windows Mobile 6.5 UI instead of TouchFLO 3D.”

HD2, the name now popular for the Leo, appears to be on track for O2 UK – including this possible catalog image that’s leaked out. Looks good for my friends across the pond to pick one of these up soon, if they so desire.

Windows Phones Now Available, 6.5 Officially Released

by JonBot on Oct.06, 2009, under Windows Phone Thoughts

http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/…ne/default.aspx

“Microsoft today unveiled a new generation of phones from leading manufacturers and mobile operators that offer an intuitive user interface, powerful Web browsing, and access to an online library of downloadable services and applications. Windows® phones – a new brand for phones running Microsoft’s Windows Mobile operating system – are now available in retail stores worldwide in a broad range of styles and prices. The new phones were shown at press events in New York, hosted by Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft’s Entertainment & Devices Division, and in Paris, where Microsoft chief executive officer Steve Ballmer showed off the new Windows phones. They also announced the availability of two key services platforms for the new phones: My Phone and Windows Marketplace for Mobile. My Phone is a free service that helps people back up and manage photos, applications and other content from their phone or PC, as well as restore information in the event of a lost phone. Windows Marketplace for Mobile is an online library of business and leisure mobile applications – as well as games – that customers can buy and download directly to their phones.”

Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s official – Windows Mobile (the operating system) is now at version 6.5, and Windows Phones (the devices) are available. Now let’s just hope all of us Dash 3G & Touch Pro 2 (As well as other devices) owners get upgrades in a timely manner!
