HP iPAQ K3 Obsidian Spotted
by JonBot on Jul.28, 2009, under Windows Phone Thoughts
“Whoa. Welcome back, iPAQ. What you see here is the HP iPAQ K3 “Obsidian,” which has made an appearance in Vietnam a couple of months after we first learned of its existence. VNExpress has it that this Windows Mobile 6.5 phone sports a 2.46-inch AMOLED touchscreen at 320×240 pixels, a Qualcomm 7200A processor @ 528MHz, 256MB RAM/512MB ROM, GPS, 3.2MB camera and WiFi b/g. So, things have been upgraded since we saw the early leaked specs.”

Oh HP, how I mourn the loss of the iPAQ line – please let your comeback actually keep the line going. This looks like a step in the right direction (WM 6.5, all the usual bells and whistles), but with HP’s track record of slipping release dates, who knows when we’ll see it. It is branded though, which is a good sign we may see it before 2012.

Samsung Omnia Update Uncripples GPS On Verizon Models
by JonBot on Jul.20, 2009, under Windows Phone Thoughts
“New software for the Samsung Omnia that will give customers an additional option for navigation is now available. The open GPS feature allows customers to purchase or use free applications by adding them to the device. Customers can still use VZ Navigator with turn by turn directions that talk to you while driving and takes you to millions of locations throughout the U. S. and just recently parts of Europe.”

Every so often Verizon tries to not appear so evil. Omnia owners on Big V, take advantage of this glimpse of civility!

Verizon Offers Firmware Update for HTC Touch Pro
by JonBot on Jun.10, 2009, under Windows Phone Thoughts
“Verizon Wireless has approved a firmware update for the HTC Touch Pro, which makes three major improvements. The update, firmware version 1.08, adds the long-awaited unlocked GPS support. PhoneNews.com previously reported that Verizon agreed to unlock GPS on the Samsung Saga, Samsung Omnia, and HTC Touch Pro. This is the first of three official updates that will make good on that promise, made last year. PhoneNews.com has confirmed that the update enables standard GPS functionality in Google Maps, as well as Windows Live Search for Mobile. In addition, the update adds Visual Voicemail support to the Touch Pro. The Samsung Omnia was the first device to add Visual Voicemail. But, like all other Verizon devices, Visual Voicemail will cost $3/month.”

Some good news for those on the big V who like the Touch Pro. GPS is now unlocked, Live search, and Visual Voicemail. Not bad for those under Verizon’s thumb of authority.

HTC Warhawk and Fortress Headed to AT&T
by JonBot on May.25, 2009, under Windows Phone Thoughts
“We know that Sprint, Verizon, and T-Mobile are all getting versions of the Touch Pro2, but what about little ol’ AT&T? Turns out that device is codenamed “Fortress,” and it’ll accompany a Touch Diamond2 version known as “Warhawk” to market this summer. The Fortress is actually listed as targeted for May 25, which seems a bit unrealistic — but we think the document we’re looking at is a little stale, so we’re sure the inevitable delay has crept into the schedule by now. It’s expected to launch with WinMo 6.1 AKU6 (presumably upgradeable to 6.5 down the road) with full HSPA on three bands, AGPS, a 3.2 megapixel AF cam, 3.6-inch WVGA display, and Video Share support.”

Some bold colors here in the releases set for soon (the Touch Pro 2) and later in the year (the Touch Diamond 2). It’s nice that we have at least 1 carrier in the US that has a strong line of HTC devices, rather than the hit-and-miss (or hit-and-long-delay) other carriers bring.

4WinMobile Reviews O2 XDA Guide
by JonBot on May.13, 2009, under Windows Phone Thoughts
“Over recent years O2 announced and brought to the marketplace the Orbit 2 and Ignito devices which featured: 3Mpixel cameras, fast processors, large RAM / ROM, GPS, Quad band phone, Touch interface, etc. The range has now been extended with the svelte and small Xda Guide which is engineered as a fully functional phone with a definite slant towards GPS and navigation use.”

4WinMobile has an extremely comprehensive review of the O2 Xda Guide, which looks like a decent little device. Head on over for a boatload of images, and discussion on practically every aspect of the device. A tempting device for those in O2′s realm, for sure.

by Jon Westfall on Mar.06, 2009, under Windows Phone Thoughts
“Now, Samsung has released the first Windows Mobile-focused result, Samsung Windows Mobile SDK 1.0. It offers APIs to use advanced features unique to Samsung phones. You might already have experience using advanced capabilities featured in the Windows Mobile APIs, like GPS, Bluetooth or multimedia support. In addition to the Microsoft Windows Mobile APIs, you can use Samsung APIs to access phone features such as the accelerometer, notification LEDs and haptics feedback.”

Arne Hess over at the::unwired reports that Samsung’s Innovator project is now available to join. By doing so you’ll be able to access not only Windows Mobile APIs but also Samsung’s APIs for device specific stuff like haptic feedback!

Have a Warrior to Accompany Your Legionnaire
by Jon Westfall on Feb.28, 2009, under Windows Phone Thoughts
“First up, the “Legionnaire,” pictured, is your average mid- to high-end WinMo slate — HSDPA, GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi, 800MHz core, Windows Mobile 6.5, yada yada. Where it gets interesting, though, is what you do with the Legionnare; turns out i-mate wants you to plug it in to a $200 netbook shell with a 10-inch display codenamed “Warrior,” which will use the Legionnaire both as its guts and as its touchpad.”

Well, this is a step closer to what I want, except I’d prefer that the small device run a full operating system and plug into the netbook shell. But while I wait for that to happen, this looks like an acceptable solution for those who want two devices that are “meant” for each other and find Redfly’s products intriguing.
