Toshiba TG02 Whizzes Through FCC

by JonBot on Jan.29, 2010, under Windows Phone Thoughts

“Before the Nexus One and the HD2, there was the Toshiba TG01, sprinting along with a 1GHz Snapdragon in its belly and a 4.1-inch front end. Alas, that phone was hamstrung by a resistive touchscreen and a poorly thought-out skin atop an even worse OS (WinMo 6.1), but even by today’s standards its hardware spec is top notch. Color us intrigued, then, to find its successor finally making its FCC debut — with Bluetooth, GPS and WiFi (802.11b/g) connectivity in tow and a case outline suggesting some earlier leaked shots might still be accurate.”

Well, looks like the TG01 is getting a successor. Toshiba is the little OEM that could, and as we’ve all seen, sometimes they can produce quality devices. But let’s… Continue reading

Why So Much Difficulty Outlook?

by Jon Westfall on Jan.08, 2009, under Other Things

OK, so today I’m taking a break from the world of Linux to focus on the world of Windows. Windows 7 to be exact, which now lives on my Toshiba L305 alongside Ubuntu (dual-boot). I’m putting 7 through the paces which for me means installing Office 2007 and setting up Outlook 2007. I have a somewhat screwy outlook 2007 setup to begin with since I run my e-mail off my own server with it’s own self-signed certificate. So I did what I felt I had to do: Exported the root certificate from another computer, started up mmc.exe on the Win7 box and added the “Certificates” snap-in (Under the Machine account) and then imported the root certificate to the “Trusted Root Certificate Authorities” folder.

So far so good. Outlook Web Access… Continue reading

Jon’s Linux Experiment – Part 1 – The Rig

by Jon Westfall on Jan.07, 2009, under Other Things

While I’m a big fan of Linux (and have used distributions on and off since Redhat 4.2), I’ve never run a full-fledged Linux Desktop system. With the aging of my Compaq n800C and the need for a new rig, I have recently taken ownership of a Toshiba Satellite L305 (Not to be confused with my X205 Gaming Rig!). Below are the stats of the new system, which will run Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) and Windows 7 beta (When it’s released to testers, no leaked builds). It shipped with Vista Home Premium, which it ran admirably until I installed Ubuntu! So I’m off – the first entry in my Desktop Linux Experiment. I’ll be posting a few more rapid-fire here as I discuss a few problems I found on Day 1… Continue reading

“Toshiba will officially release its latest Smartphone in 8 days (June 20th), the G810. Like the G710 and G910, this new Smartphone runs on Windows Mobile 6.1, and boasts HSDPA and HSUPA support. Otherwise, it features a large 2.83″ QVGA (320 x 240) touch screen, 3Mpix camera, Bluetooth v2.0, USB v2.0, WiFi 802.11 b/g, FM radio with RDS, built-in GPS & A-GPS, and up to 4GB of memory”

Kids today don’t know how good they have it. I used to have to walk 8 miles in the snow uphill both ways to and from the device websites looking for goodies to be released this early in the year! New device release time is traditionally in the fall, but with offerings ike this one from… Continue reading

Windows Mobile Out of Place at Microsoft’s Party?

by Jon Westfall on May.21, 2008, under Windows Phone Thoughts

It’s been a week of technological upgrades for me in the Entertainment realm. Prior to Saturday, the last console system I’d owned was 8-bit Nintendo, my smartphone was my only music player that was updated (as I’d outgrown my 30 GB Zune and my 60 GB iPod’s screen was just too small anymore), and my Toshiba laptop with Windows Media Center did very little media wise, save store my music and play it back via Windows Media Player. That changed with recent purchases of an Xbox 360 and a Zune 80. Now I’m looking at the smartphone and wondering why its implementation isn’t up to par with these other two Microsoft products. And more importantly, what should be done about that! As I write this, my Zune is synchronizing wirelessly… Continue reading
