Why Do You Stick With Windows Mobile As A Phone? PDF Print E-mail
User Rating: / 0
Windows Mobile Pocket PCs and Smartphones seem to be the ultimate phone devices. After all, what other phone out there can sync directly to an exchange server, play pretty much any media imaginable, browse the web with several different web browser choices, and offer a seemingly unlimited amount of third-party software? But for some reason, it seems they miss the mark on some of the most important phone features. My Jasjar is sluggish to answer the phone more than 50% of the time, resulting in the need to call people back. My K-Jam's Send/End buttons were worn down within a few weeks, requiring more than a subtle push to answer the calls there. My iPaq Mobile Messenger frequently is chugging along too much with it's own internal nonsense that placing a call takes 5 - 10 seconds longer than it should. These are the ultimate phone devices?

Then again, I still stick with Windows Mobile for the reasons I cited above (e.g., the good parts). Why? Well, I truly believe that they are the best phone devices out there for my own needs. A "dumb" phone may be able to show my POP3 email box (...maybe...) but it can't get my email pushed to it, or easily sync my contacts, or make sending text messages ludicrously fast. So I stick with Windows Mobile, primarily Pocket PCs rather than Smartphones, despite the annoyances. It doesn't suprise me, however, that some get fed up and leave the platform while MS struggles to fix some very mundane things (In their defense, my Treo 750 is quite a bit faster at answering calls than my original i-Mate Pocket PC was!).

So what keeps you with this platform for a phone? (despite our frequent questions or complaints!) Or have you jumped ship and went to a dumb phone? And what are the deal-makers or breakers? (e.g., what does MS have to fix within the next year or you're OUT!)

CoolSmartPhone Lives Up To Name By Posting On Kaiser PDF Print E-mail

"I mentioned in my HTC Touch review that HTC seem to be pushing the envelope with their handsets at the moment. It's fair to say that HTC are adding features and functionality quicker than even Microsoft themselves. Now, with the Kaiser, HTC has thrown everything into the specifications listings - the only thing missing is the kitchen sink."

Personally I'm upset that HTC decided not to include the kitchen sink in this device Mr. Green. Really, the only thing I can find wrong with this device is the form-factor (As some are not fans of the sideways slider). Once you get past that, what more could HTC offer in this device to "please all the people"? Now I just hope that once I can get my hands on one of these, they live up to the hype!

Kaiser Coming To AT&T? Perhaps In August PDF Print E-mail
User Rating: / 0
"The Cingular 8525 has proved to be a popular model with AT&T, but it's starting to show its age. Rumor has it that this device will soon be replaced by a device based on the HTC Kaiser. This model -- supposedly to be called the AT&T 8925 -- will, at first glance, look a great deal like the 8525. It will have a tablet shape with a QWERTY keyboard hidden below the 2.8-inch, QVGA screen."

The little dynamo of my latest device dreams looks like it's setting up for an AT&T release possibly as early as next month. The Kaiser is a pretty full featured package, and if it's sold through an American provider, the price should drop down to a reasonable range. I knew AT&T was toying with the Kaiser when I saw a leaked ROM version with Cingular branding on it - but the August release date is news to me. Anyone ready to line up and get this thing the day it is released? It sure seems to beat that other popular device AT&T has out these days!

Windows Mobile Demos From Around The Globe PDF Print E-mail
User Rating: / 0
"More than ever before, WorldWide Partner Conference was a serious demo fest with lots of cool technology shown off during the keynotes. Silverlight, Photosyth, Seadragon, Surface and more. Hats off to the WPC folks for showing off our innovations to an audience that sometimes only really gets to see (and sell) our business software. I already have lots of interest from UK Partners on Silverlight and Surface in particular. Needless to say I'll need one of the latter for research purposes Smile"

Some fairly cool demos have been posted by Steve Clayton on his MSDN blog site. If you wish you were at the partner conference to see the demos, wish no longer - watch them online!

Filter Your Exchange Email Before It Reaches Your Device! PDF Print E-mail
User Rating: / 0
"We all know the problem: e-mail you don't need or never want is still sent to you, and it ends up on the place where it takes the most effort to ignore or remove it: your mobile inbox. This could make mobile e-mail even counterproductive. It isn't just SPAM, it can be anything. It comes from friends and colleagues too. It can be the invitation to yet another party, people fighting over something using e-mail as a medium (and you in the CC), invitations to eat cake to celebrate something, a complaint about workplace tidyness or someone reporting that a car has its lights on in the parkinglot. It is completely nonsense, especially since you will probably be out of the office anyway. But it will still trigger an alarm you will respond to. It is noise in your daily routine. It makes you less effective and it should go."

Jaap Van Ekris over at Modern Nomads sent us a note about the new tutorial / wiki page they have up regarding server-side filtering. I have several filters setup in Outlook (and a few on my exchange server for the rest of my users) and have to say that they do make life a lot easier for all involved. Cut down on the amount of junk reaching your mobile device by creating some filters today!

V2R has released SAMs Carousel for both Pocket PC and Smartphone. While it is fairly pretty, I'm not sure it really makes it easier to use a Pocket PC or Smartphone. But then again, if you've got iPhone envy for it's "pretty" face, then perhaps this will lessen the pain!
